Do Electronics Factories Need ESD Industrial Floor Overlay? Floorzy Guide

Does your Bangalore electronics factory need ESD floor overlay? Learn when anti-static flooring matters, what testing to request and Floorzy ESD options.

Quick Answer

Electronics factories handling electrostatic-sensitive components may need a designed ESD-control floor as part of a complete grounding programme. Floorzy has a dedicated ESD Floor System, but ordinary dust-proof epoxy is not automatically an ESD floor. Specify the required resistance range, grounding, footwear, humidity controls and acceptance testing for the actual operation.

What ESD flooring is meant to control

Electrostatic discharge can matter where sensitive electronic components, assemblies or testing operations are handled. Flooring is one part of an electrostatic protection programme alongside workstations, grounding, footwear and people.

The presence of PCB equipment does not automatically mean the entire building needs the same ESD finish. Identify protected work areas, material routes and handling requirements with the facility’s ESD coordinator before selecting a coating.

How an ESD overlay differs from regular epoxy

Ordinary Interior Semi Gloss epoxy is positioned for dust control and cleanability. A purpose-designed ESD system includes components intended to create and manage electrical resistance paths, often involving conductive primers and grounding details.

Floorzy publishes a separate ESD Floor System page. Its published resistance range is broad and should not replace the acceptance limits required by your site’s ESD control plan. Test the completed assembly, not just a sample of resin.

Questions for a Bengaluru electronics production facility

Ask which benches, clean work areas, stores and corridors actually need static control. Note humidity variation, cleaning practices, castor-wheel traffic and the type of ESD footwear used on site.

If the slab is cracked, dusty or uneven, repair and preparation still come first. Moisture and adhesion problems do not disappear because the final coat is conductive.

Handover testing and daily operation

Agree in writing on testing methods, sampling locations, acceptance range and documentation. Depending on the facility standard, the floor may need assessment with personnel-grounding components rather than resistance measurements alone.

After handover, maintain the surface with compatible cleaners and periodically retest according to the site programme. A cleaner floor may help operations, but only testing can establish whether the completed ESD control scheme meets its specified limits.

Floorzy Makeover’s practical approach

Assess the existing concrete, moisture, defects, traffic and downtime requirements before selecting a system. A new wearing surface can improve a suitable slab, but it does not replace repairs or structural engineering where those are necessary.

Practical steps for electronics · esd protection

Use this sequence as a planning guide. The contractor should adapt the method to test findings, product instructions and actual factory operating conditions.

STEP 01

Define protected zones

Locate static-sensitive operations and handling routes.

STEP 02

Set acceptance criteria

Agree project-specific ESD resistance and testing requirements.

STEP 03

Assess substrate

Check moisture, cracks, adhesion and slab soundness.

STEP 04

Install system

Include designed grounding and compatible build-up.

STEP 05

Verify and maintain

Document acceptance results and retesting frequency.

Example: an electronics assembly unit

A facility has an ESD-controlled PCB assembly room beside a conventional packaging space. It may make sense to specify a tested ESD system in the protected room while using an ordinary cleanable finish in non-sensitive areas. This is a planning example, not a statement about an actual client installation.

Before approving a proposal

Five questions to ask your flooring contractor

  • Which ESD standard or customer requirement applies?
  • Where are the exact protected areas?
  • How will grounding and footwear be integrated?
  • Who performs and documents acceptance tests?
  • What is the cleaning and periodic retesting plan?

Request the answers in a written scope of work so the selected system, repairs, testing and reopening conditions are clear.

AEO / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is every epoxy floor anti-static?

No. Normal epoxy flooring and purpose-designed ESD-control flooring have different electrical functions.

Does Floorzy have an ESD floor system?

Yes, Floorzy lists a dedicated ESD Floor System for static-sensitive facilities.

Can ESD flooring replace grounding wrist straps or footwear?

Not by itself. Electrostatic protection is a coordinated programme and must be engineered to the site requirements.

Should an ESD floor be tested after installation?

Yes. Agree acceptance tests and documentation before work begins.

Can an existing concrete floor receive ESD overlay?

Potentially, if it passes appropriate substrate inspection and preparation; requirements depend on the system.

What determines ESD flooring cost?

Area, substrate repairs, system construction, grounding details and testing scope affect the quotation.
